Passing the Torch: 19 Properties Officially Transferred to Texas Land Conservancy

For nearly 7 years, I had the privilege of serving on the Board of Directors at Hill Country Land Trust (HCLT), most recently as the President. Our commitment to protecting the land surrounding the iconic Enchanted Rock State Park and adjacent Hill Country was unwavering, ensuring that the viewshed remains one of trees and wide-open spaces rather than the intrusion of urban sprawl.

The Texas Hill Country is a place of enchantment, with its unique landscapes, flourishing wildlife, and breathtaking views. However, in recent years, we have witnessed the encroachment of development, with rooftops steadily transforming the once-pristine scenery.

This not only impacts the spectacular views that have long captivated us but also poses a substantial threat to the critical wildlife habitat and precious water resources that this region sustains.

My time with HCLT was a source of great personal joy and fulfillment. I witnessed firsthand the incredible passion and commitment of the Hill Country community. Together, we protected the heart and soul of the Hill Country region, and I am proud to have been a part of that extraordinary journey.

In the spirit of passing the torch, I am delighted to inform you that the Hill Country Land Trust has successfully completed a three-year process of transitioning its 19 protected properties, totaling 8,010 acres, to the capable hands of Texas Land Conservancy (TLC).

While our doors may be closing, our legacy of conservation will continue to thrive with TLC. We have every confidence in the stewardship and vision of TLC, which ensures that the natural beauty we have worked so hard to preserve will flourish for generations to come.

However, the issues surrounding Enchanted Rock are not unique to the Hill Country alone; they are affecting regions as diverse as the Blackland Prairie, the Pineywoods, the Coastal Prairie, and everywhere in between. The urgency of our mission has never been clearer. We must not be short-sighted. We have a responsibility to guarantee that the generations to come can still witness Texas' natural wonders. Our commitment to protecting the land is a legacy that will stand the test of time.

As I transition to the Texas Land Conservancy Board of Directors, I want to thank this community for all you do. With your effort and partnership, we can continue to work towards ensuring that the natural beauty and resources we cherish today will be preserved for generations to come.

Thank you for your support, dedication, and passion for the conservation of Texas.
