1,735 Acres of Golden-Cheeked Warbler Habitat Protected Forever
Festina Lente Ranch

Texas Land Conservancy is excited to announce the completion and permanent protection of two major Golden-cheeked Warbler Conservation Bank projects, Festina Lente Ranch and Danner Ranch, totaling 1,735 acres of prime endangered species habitat.
Critical Habitat in a Special Place
These two conservation easements bookend none other than Texas Parks and Wildlife Department’s Lost Maples State Natural Area. The 2,900-acre Lost Maples SNA is renowned for its bigtooth maple canyons that stun visitors with lush and vibrant fall colors seldom found in Texas but it's also a biodiversity hotspot. All three of these sites occur in the heart of the Balcones Canyonlands where Golden-cheeked Warblers thrive in the rugged oak-juniper woodlands with an abundance of small spring-fed streams.
Danner Ranch
A Corridor of Conservation Piece by Piece
For TLC, the story began in 2010 with our first site visits to Festina Lente Ranch and not completing its initial 500-acre phase until 2016. The first three phases of Danner Ranch occurred in the 2020 covid-era, an exercise in adapting to a new world, and then a final fourth phase in 2023. In 2025, TLC and our partners at Bandera Conservation Corridor, LLC completed the second phase of Festina Lente in January and its final third and fourth phases in December. 15 years later, a beautiful 4,635-acre network of nearly contiguous conservation tracts have been pieced together and support an even greater 15,000-acre corridor further secured by the Bandera Conservation Corridor, LLC and their partners.
Mitigation with Strategy
Bandera Conservation Corridor, LLC's success with creating a network of 15,000+ acres is a shining star example of the benefits of conservation banking. This large and connected ecosystem has a far greater impact than what may have otherwise been smaller and fragmented mitigation occurring on site where unavoidable impacts are occurring. Additionally, the quality of the habitat being protected around Bandera County is the best of the best, supporting a high number of breeding pairs.
Golden-cheeked Warblers and more!
Golden-cheeked Warblers are the darling treasures of the Balcones Canyonlands and Edwards Plateau but the conservation efforts to protect their habitat have far-reaching impacts. The karst limestone region is host to many endemic and vulnerable plants and animals that have evolved along with the geology, terrain, climate, and water availability. The entire ecosystem is interconnected, and by preserving the warblers, all Texans reap the incredible cascading benefits of these biological and ecological resources.
Scarlet leather flower, black-capped vireo, tropical parula, canyon rattlesnake root, plateau milkvine, Texas blacksenna, Texas mock orange, Valdina Farms salamander, and Guadalupe bass are some of the Texas Species of Greatest Conservation Need documented in and around Lost Maples SNA and illustrate the far reaching impacts of conservation in this area.
Thank you to Bandera Conservation Corridor, LLC for partnering with TLC to bring this project to completion!

Wetland and Habitat Mitigation
Texas Land Conservancy protects over 40,000 acres of land through mitigation and conservation banking. These permanent conservation agreements offset the loss of wetlands and endangered species habitats. Click here to learn more on our new Wetland and Habitat Mitigation page!
Help protect more properties like this across the state!
Texas Land Conservancy could not do this important conservation work without our members, partners, and supporters. With your support, we can work with more landowners and protect more land across the state from the negative effects of land fragmentation and poorly-planned development.
